Canva for Teachers: Your Easy Guide to Get Started

I use Canva all the time to make awesome professional looking classroom décor. A lot of teachers don’t realize what they can do with Canva and that they can get if for free! I had to write this post all about Canva for teachers to share a little more this awesome freebie!

In this post I wanted to share with you some of the questions that I get from teachers about Canva. So let’s dive in!

What is Canva?

It’s an online graphic design tool that’s pretty easy to use. It has tons of templates, graphics, photos and fonts so there’s basically endless design opportunities. Once you figure out how to use it you can create professional looking stuff even if you don’t have design experience.

Is Canva free for teachers?

Canva free for teachers

Yes! Canva has a free service for everyone, but teachers can actually get access to all of the paid features for free when they sign up for an educator account.

Who is Eligible for an Educator Account?

To be eligible for an educator account you have to be a K-12 (primary and secondary) teacher and it’s available for your students too.

How do I sign up for the educator account?

  1. First go to Canva.com
  2. Scroll down the page until you see this:

  1. Click on educational organizations.
  2. Then you’ll see this:

  1. Click on Get Verified.
  2. Then you’ll enter your email and your name.
  3. Canva will send a code to your email and then you enter the code.
  4. Then you’ll see this pop up:

  1. Then you’ll follow the prompts to enter the information so they can verify that you’re a teacher.
  2. The information requested includes:
  • Your name
  • The name of your school
  • Your school address.
  1. After Canva verifies you, you’re good to go and can start using your Canva Education account to create!

What is the difference between Canva Pro and Canva for Teachers?

So basically there’s 3 different Canva Accounts

  1. Free Account- With the free account you can create cool stuff, but you don’t have access to all of the templates, graphics, photos, fonts etc. When you’re working in the free account if you see something with a crown that’s a paid item. If you try to use it, it’ll have a huge watermark on it. If you really want to use it you can pay a few bucks to do so.
  2. Canva Pro- This is the paid subscription that right now cost about $13 a month. This is for businesses and professionals that want access to all the features on Canva.
  3. Education Account- This is the best of both worlds if you’re a teacher. You get access to all the pro features, but you don’t have to pay. YAY! Win, win for all teachers! Teachers deserve some freebies, so I think it’s really cool that Canva offers that!
