Unique Monster Classroom Ideas
First, I want to show you some unique monster classroom ideas that I found that I think would create a fun classroom environment for you and your students. All of these ideas would be perfect for a monster classroom theme!
Scary Work Coming Soon
Here’s a fun idea to set up a bulletin board at the beginning of the school year that you will later add student work to. This bulletin board features a cute, furry monster eating paper and says, “scary work coming soon”. You can steal this idea and print sheets like this in your classroom color scheme.
Color Monster Sensory Table
Create a sensory table with pom poms in bright colors inspired by the book, The Color Monster. This book helps students to identify their emotions.
You can add colorful monster stickers to containers and students can fill up pom poms that match the monster color. A sensory table like this is a great idea to let students explore without a huge mess!
Monster Week
If you don’t want a monster theme for the entire school year, consider introducing monster week. Holly, a 3rd grade teacher dedicates a week to monster themed activities. Here are some of the activities her class did during this week:
- Solved math-based mysteries based around monsters taking over the classroom,
- Applied to be on a monster squad
- Wrote papers about monsters that were hiding in the classroom
- Made Slime
- Did an eyeball estimation activity
- Worked on monster art
Color Monster Calm Corner
Create a color monster themed calm corner in your classroom. In this corner children can look at the book read feeling posters and choose the spoon of the color monster that they relate to.

Kindness Monster
Copy this idea from Amy, a 3rd grade teacher and add a kindness monster to your classroom. Each time a student witnesses an act of kindness they are encouraged to feed the kindness monster a note. The teacher shares the notes at the end of the day during class meeting time.
You can read, “The Monster Who Lost His Mean” to kick of this class activity. This is a good book to teach students that it’s not what you are called but who you are that counts.

Desk Monster Idea
Here’s a great way to add a craft activity and a little behavior management too. First have students create desk monsters with paint, rocks, gems and googly eyes. If you are familiar with desk pets you can use desk monsters in the same way.
How to use desk monsters in your class
- Students get to keep desk monsters on their desk, but they are taken to the monster day care if they are playing with them.
- They can earn food (food shaped erasers) and accessories for their desk monsters based on great behavior.
- You could also introduce this idea with toy monsters like these ones.

Monster Hair Cut Activity
Here’s a great activity for younger students working on scissor skills. Create these adorable monsters and have students work on giving theirs a haircut! Here’s how to create these little monsters:
- Take two pieces of colorful paper and staple them together.
- Then cut waves in the paper from the bottom up to the staples.
- Let students create a monster face on cardboard.
- Between the layers put the cardboard monster face.
- Give students hair clips so they can style the hair after they make cuts.
Build Your Own Little Monster
