Dr. Seuss Birthday Celebration Ideas
Theodor Geisel aka Dr. Seuss is the beloved author of all of the wonderful books that make reading fun for students of all ages!
Dr. Seuss’s Birthday is March 2nd and this is also National Read Across America Day. Any Wednesday in March you could celebrate Wacky Wednesday. Many schools like to celebrate Dr Seuss Week the first week in March.
These would be the perfect times to introduce some Dr. Seuss games in your classroom. Lets’ check out some of the best Dr Seuss activities and games that your students will have so much fun with while learning.
Minute to Win it Dr. Seuss Games for the Classroom
Do your students love to play minute to win it games? If so, then check out these fun ideas to help you celebrate Read Across American Week with your students.
1 | Truffle Seed Shuffle
First read your children Truffula Trees. Then get ready to play this fun game.
Materials Needed:
- Ice Trays
- Colorful Poms for the Truffula Seeds
- Tweezers
- Timer
Students have one minute to transfer all of the truffle seeds from the plate to the ice cube trays using the tweezers! This game is a fun way to help develop fine motor skills.
2 | Minute to Win it Ten Apples up on Top Balance Game
Here’s a fun minute to win it game to play on Dr. Seuss’s birthday. First read your students the book Ten Apples up on Top.
Materials for Game:
- 10 Dice per child
- Large popsicle sticks, one per child.
- One minute timer
First have student’s write their name on their popsicle stick. Then set the timer for one minute. Students have to put the popsicle stick in their mouth and then stack ten dice on their stick using only one hand before the timer goes off!
3 | Green Eggs in Corn
Here’s another great activity that develops those fine motor skills and is super fun! Start by reading your students the classic book Green Eggs in Ham.
Materials Needed
- Yellow Corn
- Bowls
- Tweezers
- A Timer
- A green marker
To Prep:
- Color 5 pieces of corn green and add them to a bowl for each student. Mix in the yellow corn.
To play students will have one minute to try to pick out all of the green corn from their bowl!
Dr Seuss Games for Younger Students
First let’s check out some fun educational activities that are perfect for preschool, kindergarteners and 1st graders. These games will help develop fine motor skills and focus on word recognition and sight words for young children
4 | Green Egg Rhyming Game
You can create a rhyme matching game for students with a green egg theme. First cut out egg shapes with green construction paper. Then write 2 rhyming words on the eggs.
Next cut them into two pieces with one word on each piece. Mix up the pieces and challenge students to put the eggs back together by finding the rhyming match.
5 | Green Eggs and Ham Sight Word Egg Flip
Here’s the perfect way to work on sight word recognition during March. To make this game you can cut out egg shapes with white paper and then glue green circles on top with sight words written on them. Have students read the word and then scoop it into the frying pan!
6 | Dr Seuss Bananagrams
To start off read some of your students favorite Dr Seuss books like Go Dog Go to spark ideas for word games. Then create these Bananagrams cards pictured.
Provide students with cards and scrabble tiles. Challenge students to create words with all of their cards.
7 | Hop on Pop Popcorn Game
This fun game goes perfectly with the book, Hop on Pop. To create the game, you can print sight words on yellow paper and then cut them out in popcorn shapes. Have young students say the word and then pick it up with tongs and place it in a popcorn container.
Fun Dr. Seuss Games for the Classroom

8 | Cat in the Hat Hat Stack
- Materials: Striped paper hats, plastic cups, or stacking blocks.
- How to Play: Students work in teams or individually to stack as many “hats” as they can before the stack tumbles.
- Educational Twist: Incorporate counting, estimating, or measuring the height of the stacks.
9 | Dr. Seuss Character Pictionary
- Materials: Whiteboard or drawing paper, markers.
- How to Play: Write the names of Dr. Seuss characters (like The Grinch, Horton, or the Lorax) on slips of paper. Students draw the characters while their teammates guess who it is.
- Educational Benefits: Enhances vocabulary and encourages creativity.
10 | Green Eggs and Ham Relay
- Materials: Plastic green eggs and spoons.
- How to Play: Students balance the green eggs on spoons while racing to a finish line. If they drop the eggs, they have to go back to the start.
11 | Oh, The Places You’ll Go Map Adventure
- Materials: Large sheet of paper, stickers, or markers.
- How to Play: Create a treasure map based on different Dr. Seuss book locations. Give students clues to find “destinations” around the classroom.
- Educational Lessons: Teaches geography, directions, and problem-solving.
12 | Horton Hears a Who Listening Game
- Materials: Small objects in containers that make sounds, (rice, beans, cotton balls) blindfolds.
- How to Play: Students take turns identifying the sound in a container without looking. They can shake and listen to the sound that the material makes. Relate it to Horton’s ability to hear tiny voices.
13 | Fox in Socks Tongue Twister Challenge
- Materials: Dr. Seuss tongue twister excerpts.
- How to Play: Challenge students to read tricky tongue twisters as clearly and quickly as possible. Here are some memorable Dr Seuss tongue twisters to try:

14 | One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish Learning Game
First read your class One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish. Then your class gets to go fishing!
Miss Parker found these fishing cards at Michaels. If you can’t find these you can create simple ones with blue, red and yellow construction paper. On the back of each card you can add a math activities, letter sounds, phonics or a trivia question based on a lesson!
To make the fishing pole start with a rod or a long stick and tie a long piece of string or thin rope on to it. Then add a magnet at the end of the fishing pole and on each of the fish.
15 | One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish Alphabet Game
For another spin on this game create alphabet fishing cards. Copy the idea above and put letters on the fish. Have students call out the letter they are fishing for and then try to get it!
16 | Pin the Star on the Sneetch
You can create this game by printing out a picture of a sneetch and a star. Then play it just like pin the tail on the donkey!
17 | Cat in the Hat Bean Bag Toss
Cut out a hole in a cardboard box and add a Cat in the hat graphic to make this bean bag toss game!
18 | Favorite Book Character Ring Toss
Here’s an easy ring toss game that you can add to your party activities during Read Across America week. Hit up the Dollar Tree for cones and rings. Then add some favorite characters like Horton, The Grinch and the Lorax.
