Choose Your Color Scheme

The first thing that you’ll want to start thinking about is choosing your color scheme. You want to come up with a group of four or five colors that you love, that look great together and that fit with the season. For our fall shoot we went for a deep blue, mustard, black and tan. Check it out below.

Coordinate Outfits Don’t Match Exactly

Another tip for trying to decide on your family’s outfits is to find pieces that mix well together but don’t match exactly. So, you don’t want the entire family in a yellow top with khaki pants, instead find pieces that work together and weave you color scheme throughout. Check out an example below of coordinating outfits in the color scheme I just showed you.

Start with Your Outfit and then Build Around It

Another tip is if you are stuck on your color scheme start by picking out one piece and then building the other family outfits around it, one at time. For example, start with a dress that you love that you look amazing in and then next add the main color of the dress to one family members’ outfit. Then from there start adding in more colors in coordinating pieces and accessories. You don’t need to have every person with all five colors in their outfits.

Family Photo Outfits for Every Season

I love family photos in all seasons for different reasons. In every season there is something completely unique that you can capture in your photos. So far, I have showed you one example of a fall color scheme with blue, mustard, black and tan. Read on and I will show you examples of outfits for every season and where you can get them.

Winter Family Photo Outfit Ideas

Are thinking about doing a winter family photo shoot? If you have winter snow that will make your pictures stunning. Another thing I love about a winter shoot is you have so many options with layering clothes which can add a lot of interest to your pictures. If you need to add a little more of one of your colors you can easily add a winter accessory like a scarf, hat or boots in that color. This is why it is so fun to choose your winter family photo outfits. Below check out an example of a classic winter color scheme of red, navy, black and white.

Family Photo Outfits for Spring

Spring is a popular time for a family photo shoot because the flowers are blooming and the weather is starting to get nice again. You’ll notice below that I added flowy fabrics to the outfits which can add movement to the pictures which turns out really pretty. Lighter colors are a great choice for spring family photo outfits. Sometimes it is nice to add at least one darker color for a little contrast. In my example below I have chosen pink, dark grey, white and baby blue.

Now, that we have covered tips for picking out your family photo outfits let me give you a few more tips for having the perfect family photo shoot.

Make Sure Everyone is Comfortable

Remember if it is an outdoor shoot you will probably be walking through all sorts of terrain to get those perfect pics. So, don’t wear uncomfortable high heels or put your kiddos in shoes they haven’t broken in yet and please no itchy sweaters! Moms know that when kids aren’t happy, they are not going to cooperate and smile for you no matter how much you bribe.

Get Individual Pictures of Your Kids

Of course, you will get your family shots but you will want to make sure that you get some of just the kids together and the kids individually too. They are growing so fast you will want to capture this moment in time of each of them.

Location is Everything

Work with your photographer to find a location that will work for you. If you are dying to have some shots with the gorgeous fall foliage let them know. If your style is more industrial you will want to make sure that you get industrial backgrounds too. Your photographer probably knows tons of great spots and can work with what you are looking for.

Choose the Right Photographer

Find a fun photographer that is used to working with families to get the best pictures. Take a look at their portfolio, most have these online and make sure that they take some fun candid shots because those are often the ones you will cherish most! A perfect example is the picture below where our photographer had us tickle our son, which turned out to be one of our favorite pictures.

I hope you enjoyed my tips for picking your family photo outfits and for having the best fall family photo shoot. Don’t put to much pressure on having the perfect shoot. You can use some of my ideas and then just have fun and enjoy capturing memories with your family that you will cherish forever. Do you have any more tips on capturing great family photos? If so, please leave a comment and let me know!
